illin’

Most of you I am assuming are aware of the Run DMC song “She be Illin.” I would like to take this time to introduce a different version of this popular rap song composed by one of my relatives, Steven Beling. I find the subject matter to be quite compelling and relevant, and therefore feel the need to post it so that all can not only be enlightened but also gain a greater knowledge once again on the compelling subject matter. Thank you to Uncle Stevie and hoping you don’t mind that I have posted this.

She Be Willin’

One day Jo was chillin’ in a dorm room in Wellesley,
Just mindin’ her business, enjoying the partay,
This dude walks in acting strange and kinda funny,
He says to Jo, “hey honey,
do you want to join the Peace Corps?, We can give you no money”
She smiles yes, and says “ok!”
And soon enough is in Ma-La-Way.

She be willing…she be willin’

When Jo gets there, a chicken needs killing,
and our girl, oh yeah, she be willing…she be willin’

Johannah is providing stoves for the masses,
She needs our help, we get off our fat asses.
So send a dolla or maybe just a shilling,

Because yea, you know it, she be willing, she be willin’
Well this rap is over, hey I’m no Bob Dylan,
But Johannah, well, of course, she be willing, she be willin’…

One Response to “illin’”

    Jo,
I’ve been combing through blogs written by PCVs in Malawi, and the English major in me was enthralled by your entries, the images your painting, and the rawness you describe that is experiencing life through the eyes of a PCV. I’ve said goodbye to my partner of 2 1/2 years, who is now with his family about to leave in June to join the next group of PCVs in Malawi. So, of course, I’m trying to learn as much as I can and get as many perspectives about his potential life as I am able, and as many as others are willing and able to give. I’d really love, if you’re willing and able, and as you have time, to hear from you and maybe see if I can ask some questions about how to prepare to be the support for a loved one about to embark on this multifaceted adventure. My e-mail is paul.mitchell@ou.edu, and I do hope in the future to hear from you. If not, I appreciate following your updates here. Thank you!
    Paul
